The governor of the state of New York, Andrew M. Cuomo, has announced that $3.6 million of funding will be made available to help increase solar energy access. The funding is being made available to increase the availability of the renewable energy for low – to medium – income communities throughout the state.
Solar Energy will help New York reach its target of ensuring 50% of its energy needs comes from that of renewable sources by 2030, a target which is among the most ambitious within the country. If New York ends up reaching this target, it will mean they have reduced their greenhouse gas emissions around 40 percent in the 40 year period of 1990 – 2030.
“Clean energy is key to combatting climate change and we must ensure that the development and use of these cutting edge technologies are not only available to the wealthy,” Governor Cuomo said. “Through this effort, we are helping New Yorkers to save money and are building a cleaner and more resilient New York for all.”
The low earning communities face numerous barriers which can delay the progression of solar projects, such as financing, customer outreach and procurement. This funding will hopefully enable communities to overcome hurdles which prevent the progression of cheap and reliable clean energy.

The funding is made available through the Governor’s NY-Sun Initiative and is being administered in addition to the State’s $234 million commitment under the Clean Energy Fund for energy efficiency and renewable energy projects for LMI households.
