The Port of Sydney in Nova Scotia, Canada, is likely to become the first in North America to have the capacity to accommodate the largest shipping containers in the world, if the proposed and highly supported
development goes ahead.
Sydney Harbour Investment Partners (SHIP) and Ports America – the biggest terminal operator in North America – jointly announced on Monday that they are planning a dedicated, semi-automated deep-water
container facility that could accommodate ships with capacity for more than 18,000 teus. Ports America would, under the deal, manage and operate the terminal for 40 years.
The terminal, if constructed would be named ‘Novaporte’ and would take a predicted two years to build. If/when it is built; the terminal would likely become a first stop for ships coming from Europe and Asia,
which would transit via the Suez Canal.
