There are two kinds of thermal alignment of titanium bar parts: thermal alignment and one time alignment; Reheat alignment after preforming. The latter is to put the preformed parts on the heated mold, preheat to the specified temperature, under the pressure, maintain a certain time, the second forming or hot pressure alignment, and then take out the parts.

The basic technology of heat adjustment of titanium rod parts

Thermal alignment is usually used to reduce the size error or distortion of preformed parts made by other forming processes and to improve the quality of parts. The deviation of Angle and shape size, shape deviation, bending radius deviation, ripple on convex edge, wrinkle (except dead wrinkle) and distortion, as well as web warping or agitation, etc. of titanium rod parts can be reduced to a great extent by thermal alignment, so as to obtain qualified parts that meet the final shape requirements.

The basic technology of thermal alignment:

1. Install the mold into the hot press, and preheat the mold in the heating furnace;

2. Heat the mold to the calibration temperature and make the temperature stable;

3. The wool or preformed parts are installed on the mold, so that it is heated to the calibration temperature;

4. After closing the mold, apply enough pressure and keep it for a certain time to get the required parts;

5. Remove the parts from the mold and cool them evenly to room temperature.

It is important to ensure that the parts are cooled evenly. If the parts with good alignment, the residual stress caused by the large temperature difference during cooling will cause the parts to warp. For this purpose, the parts may be hung on a special cooling rack or moved to a asbestos pad for cooling. If necessary, some parts may be cooled at a slow speed or in a clamped state by means of an equalizing plate or calibrating fixture. Due to the cadmium (Cd), tin (Sn), lead (Pb) and zinc (Zn) base alloy, when adhered to the titanium rod at high temperature, the titanium will become brittle (such as "cadmium brittle"), parts may crack and complete damage. Therefore, it is forbidden to use lead or lead-based alloy in molds or fixtures in contact with titanium. It is also prohibited to use zinc or tin-based alloy molds or clamps and galvanized, tin or cadmium molds, clamps or temporary fasteners when metal contamination is not removed as required.

In the thermal alignment, the workpiece, mold, operating tools must be kept clean, not with dirt or mixed with any sundries.

Guest contributors are welcome at the Alloy Wiki.It is a weekly wiki and guide on alloy information and processing technology, while also about the vast array of opportunities that are present in manufacturing. Our team of writers consists of a Machining Material Supplier / Machinist / Tool and Die Maker, a Biomedical Engineer / Product Development Engineer, a Job Development Coordinator / Adjunct Professor, and a President and CEO of a manufacturing facility.
