Due to the tendency of titanium alloy materials to fill grinding wheels, it is difficult to grind titanium alloy bar and TC4 titanium alloy. During grinding, the high temperature rise on the interface between metal and grinding wheel causes high residual stress on the grinding surface. Meanwhile, the surface finish is not ideal.
These difficulties can be fundamentally addressed by:
(1) Select the appropriate grinding wheel, such as silicon carbide grinding wheel, the sand size is medium (60~80), the hardness is medium (J~M), the surface speed is 700~1200m/min, alumina (alumina powder or corundum) grinding wheel should be used at a lower speed, such as 550~600min. Medium granularity is also required.
(2) Adopt low grinding wheel speed and feed speed; Due to the low speed of the grinding wheel, less sparks are generated.
(3) With buffer or cutting liquid cooling agent cooling, with ceramic binder and chlorinated or vulcanized cutting oil, you can get good results. No matter what type of coolant is used, it should be well filtered to eliminate "fishtail" stains caused by titanium particle recycling.
(4) The spark of titanium may catch fire when exposed to oil mist, but the danger can be reduced when the oil is completely immersed in the workpiece. Rustproof ammonium nitrite solution can completely eliminate the risk of fire.
However, even the best grinding conditions will reduce the fatigue performance of the workpiece.
