Okay, I think it is safe to say that the transportation industry is going through one of its biggest ever transitional periods, with a vast number of motor companies and tech giants investing heavily in autonomous and electric vehicles.
If you said to someone 2 years ago that by August 2016 a company would have be offering driverless taxis to the general public, then they probably would have laughed at you, nevertheless, that’s exactly what tech company NuTonomy have recently begun offering in Singapore. However, the latest revelation by European-aviation giant Airbus might have just trumped the lot with their latest announcement, the company says they expect to have made a prototype and be doing tests of driverless air taxis by the end of 2017.
Yes, what you expect to see in maybe Star Wars or a Disney movie could in the near future become a reality, with Airbus believing there will be a demand from millions for driverless flying taxis. Users will be able to summon the taxi via an app on their smartphone, from there it will land outside of the property (better hope you have a large garden) and take you to your required destination. “In as little as 10 years, we could have products on the market that revolutionize urban travel for millions of people,” said Rodin Lyasoff, Airbus project executive.
When broken down by Lyasoff, it doesn’t actually sound like a project that is too farfetched, “Many of the technologies needed, such as batteries, motors and avionics are most of the way there” and given Airbus vast experience and knowhow of the aviation industry, they are arguably the best suited company in the world to undertake such a unique project.
